Some tours stick with you, and the Müllers’ afternoon in March was one of them. Three generations — grandparents, parents and a 9-year-old who turned out to be the best photographer in the jeep — booked our sunset tour two weeks in advance and showed up ready for everything.

The route

We picked the family up from their hotel in Velas at 4:30 PM and headed straight up to the central plateau before dropping down the north coast.

  • Stop 1 — Miradouro do Pico do Carvão. Quick photo, quick context, quick rolling on.
  • Stop 2 — Fajã das Almas overlook. The tide was out and we could see the pebble beach all the way down.
  • Stop 3 — Fajã do Ouvidor. Light meal here: bread, local cheese, black pudding from Velas, and a glass of Verdelho for the grown-ups.
  • Stop 4 — A pull-off above Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo for golden hour. The clouds parted exactly on cue.

The moment

About 20 minutes before sunset the wind dropped completely. The Pico volcano on the next island over caught the last light and turned the colour of warm bread. The 9-year-old grabbed the camera, climbed onto the jeep’s bumper for the angle, and produced what their mom later texted us was the family Christmas-card shot for 2026.

“Best three hours of our entire trip. The kids didn’t complain once, and the food at Ouvidor was unexpected and perfect.” — Anna M.

What worked

  • Booking early — March is shoulder season; we had the road to ourselves.
  • Layered clothing — temperature dropped 5°C between Velas and the summit.
  • Empty memory cards — they shot 600+ photos.

What we’d do differently

Honestly, not much. If you’re traveling with kids who have an interest in photography, ask us about the sunset tour specifically — it’s the one that consistently delivers the most “wow” moments per minute.
